Senda del Oso with Children
2026 Practical Guide

Senda del Oso with Children

One of the best family cycling days in Spain — as long as you know a few things before you go.

Why it's ideal for families

No cars, ever

The entire route runs on the old railway — no road crossings. Children can pedal freely without worrying about traffic.

Flat or downhill

No technical climbs. Even very young children can complete the full route.

Bears at the finish

The bear enclosure in Proaza is free and open April to October. One of the best ways to end a family day.

Short and manageable

The Tuñón–Proaza section is 11 km — perfect for a morning or relaxed afternoon at family pace.

Guide by age group

0–3 years

Trailer

At this age, the best option is a covered trailer attached to an adult bike. Comfortable, shaded and with a rain cover.

3–5 years

Seat or balance bike

Child seat on the adult bike, or balance bike on flat sections. Many children this age manage 5–8 km easily.

5–9 years

Kids' bike (16" / 20")

Old enough for their own bike. The Tuñón–Proaza section (11 km flat) is perfectly manageable. Bring extra snacks.

10+ years

Any section

From here they can tackle any section, including Proaza–Valdemurio. Speed and independence grow considerably at this age.

What usually goes wrong — and how to avoid it

Underestimating the time
With children, everything takes longer. Add at least 40–50% to the estimated time. A 1.5-hour route becomes a 2.5-hour one with stops, photos and snack breaks.
Arriving too late in summer
Car parks fill before 10:00 am in July and August. Get there early or use public transport from Oviedo.
Not bringing enough water
Children dehydrate faster than adults, especially in summer. One litre per person for a morning is a reasonable minimum.
Choosing the wrong equipment
A child who can't touch the ground on their bike will be stressed and tired. Make sure the size is right before you set off.
