Tuñón

Start Start

This is where most rental companies are based. Collect your bikes, adjust the saddles and you're off. The car park has ~100 spaces — arrives early in summer.

2

Trubia Riverside

Km 1–4

The first stretch follows the riverbank very closely. If the season is right, you might spot herons, kingfishers or even otters fishing in the shallows.

3

Las Agüeras Bridge

Km 5

Halfway point and a natural stop. The old stone bridge is perfect for photos — and for letting the kids throw a few stones into the river below.

4

Peñas Juntas Viewpoint

Km 8

The canyon walls start to close in. It's the same gorge visible from the Entrago–Buyera section, but from a different angle. Impressive regardless of direction.

Proaza

Finish · 11 km Finish

End point. The bear enclosure is here — free and open April to October. After a coffee and tortilla, the ride back to Tuñón passes in no time.

Coming with children — what you need to know

Trailers from age 0
Babies travel in covered trailers attached to an adult bike. From about 4 years, most kids can pedal a small bicycle the full 11 km.
Rest stops every 2–3 km
The route has benches and flat areas at regular intervals. A picnic by the river is part of the experience.
No traffic anywhere on the route
The entire section runs on the old railway track. No road to cross. Children can cycle freely without looking out for cars.
Bear enclosure at the end
Proaza has a small enclosure where you can sometimes see the Cantabrian brown bears up close. Free entry, April to October.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tuñón–Proaza suitable for a 3-year-old?

With a trailer, no problem. With a balance bike, it depends on the child — some manage it, others get tired. Bringing a trailer as backup is always a good idea.

Can I cycle from Proaza back to Tuñón without a shuttle?

Yes — the route is so flat that the return is equally easy. Many families do both ways on the same day.

Is there somewhere to eat in Proaza?

Yes, several bars and restaurants right next to the route. Most open every day in season. Check times in winter.

How early should I arrive in Tuñón in summer?

Before 9:30 am if you want a guaranteed parking space. The car park fills before 10:00 am in July and August.
